Applied Math & Data Science @ UC Berkeley

Tara Timm

Hi! I'm Tara Timm, an Applied Math & Data Science student at Berkeley.

I’m passionate about mathematics and technology and discovering how we can use these tools to make a lasting impact. I enjoy working on projects that help me to grow as a problem solver by exposing me to new ways of thinking and giving me the opportunity to think outside the box.

About me

I love learning and have explored a variety of breadths at Berkeley, pursuing a simultaneous degree in Applied Math with an emphasis in Economics, and Data Science with an emphasis in Psychology and Human Behavior, while also working toward the UC Berkeley Sutardja Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Technology.

Outside the classroom I still consider myself a student of my environment and love learning new skills and trying new things. Some of the newest challenges I've taken on include running a half marathon, learning to DJ, and navigating the kitchen in my first college apartment. Some of my favorite long-term hobbies include golfing, photography and being in nature. I also believe you can learn something from every good story, which is why I am an avid consumer of all forms of media (Television: Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Modern Family; Film: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Lady Bird; Books: Educated, Normal People)

Gilead Sciences Stock Forecasting

Built an XGBoost-based forecasting model to evaluate whether sell-side research reports improve prediction accuracy for Gilead Sciences stock prices.

Conducted Diebold–Mariano and noise permutation tests to assess statistical significance across 34 firms; 20 firms showed improved predictive performance, though none exceeded the 0.05 significance threshold.

Received Honorable Mention at the 2026 UC Berkeley Data Science Symposium.
